There are too many hungry kids and families in Alabama, and it’s not just because of the pandemic. But this isn’t a hopeless story about increasing needs with no solution in sight. There is a solution – you. You and your firm’s participation in the 2021 Legal Food Frenzy will help increase the reach of Alabama’s food banks at a time when the needs are growing larger than ever before.
2019 was a banner year for hunger – in a bad way. The Alabama Food Bank Association’s (ALFBA) eight member regions distributed 60 million pounds of food in 2019. But, with the pandemic upon us in 2020, food insecurity grew and the ALFBA members stepped up distributing over 73 million pounds – a 22% increase!
In Alabama 400,000 kids count on their schools for at least one meal a day. And when school is out of session, the ALFBA steps in to help through the Summer Meals program. With the pandemic in 2020, kids were sent home and the Summer break was extended. Instead of the typical 10-week school break, Summer Meals Program meals for 20 weeks reaching 100,000 kids and serving nearly $1 million worth of meals.
